Well, after a half year hiatus, I am finally posting an update! I was nearly about to close up shop on the blog since we were slated to return to the USA in Aug 2010. However, we have just signed on for 2 more years abroad in Hong Kong, so I have re-committed myself to posting here more regularly and keeping everyone up to date with the Hong Kong Deaton clan!

Will's FOURTH Birthday and Halloween Party

Has it REALLY been almost 2 months since I updated this blog? That, my friends, is sad. Sorry for my absence. I will blame it mostly on pregnancy induced sleepiness at night and running after the boys all day long! :)

We just celebrated Will's FOURTH birthday on October 29, 2009, which seems unimaginable. He had a great day and we had a fun party for him on Halloween with lots of fun spooky treats. Here are some photos from his party:

Not the most flattering picture...I was already in my pj's and ready for bed (granted it was only 7pm!). The boys have decided that they want to name the baby Spicy Eyes. Very comical. So now we are all referring to the baby as Spicy Eyes. :) Poor kid! I promise, we do have real names *almost* picked out.

Our new home in Discovery Bay, Hong Kong

After just a week of being back in Hong Kong, we moved into our new apartment in Discovery Bay (otherwise known to the locals as DB). It is a small community on Lantau Island (one of the outlying islands of Hong Kong) and is home to a large ex-pat (expatriate) community made up of people from all over the world - although I must admit that the majority of people who live out here are "westerners" (from UK, Australia, New Zealand, Europe and the USA). Now, at first, we were not sold on the idea as we thought the whole idea of living in Hong Kong was to be immersed in the hustle and bustle of the city (and culture). However, DB offers some really wonderful things that appealed to us for our second year in Hong Kong (and especially since we are expecting a new addition!). First, there are no residential cars (just buses and privately owned golf carts) so there is very little traffic. Second, the community is almost entirely made up of young families with small children, so a lot of things out here are really geared towards families and kids. Third, it is much less crowded than most places in Hong Kong! I must admit, this is one of the things that I like the most! ;)

I am working on taking some pictures of Discovery Bay itself (including the beach, pools, plaza area of shops and restaurants and other key places) but for now, I thought I would post some pictures of our new place. So here you go, enjoy!

It's still a work in progress! Nothing on the walls yet, which makes it seem a little empty but overall we are thrilled with the place. It has a lot more space to run for the boys, which is a HUGE bonus. And the back patio is really lovely. Still too hot and humid to really sit out and enjoy it but the boys like playing back there and it will be great by October! :)

BABY #3!!!

We are so excited to announce that we are expecting baby #3! I am 12 weeks along and due Feb 20, 2010. And yes...baby #3 will be born in Hong Kong!

We are obviously all very excited...especially the boys! They have been talking and singing to the baby already, which is really very sweet. And they both say it is going to be a girl, although Daddy David is already predicting a third boy. I am just hoping for a healthy, happy, CALM baby. ;)

Please send us your good thoughts over the next 6+ months. We will keep everyone updated!

A big day...

Well...yesterday was my last official day of nursing my "baby"...who turns 2 next month...haha. I thought he would put up a huge fight (he was only nursing at night both before bed and if he woke up in the middle of the night). He cried for about 5 minutes tonight while we were reading stories in bed. Then he just gave up! It took him a while to fall asleep, but he wasn't mad about it. *whew* Now, lets hope the rest is smooth sailing!

Big fun at Playtown!

The rainy season is in full swing in Hong Kong, so we have been trying to find indoor activities that will still allow the boys to run and burn energy. I came across a place called Playtown, which is essentially an indoor play area with tons of climbing structures, tunnels, fast slides, bounce house and a whole area devoted to these "guns" that use air to shoot soft nerf-like balls. It is any kids dreamland. Needless to say, the boys had a blast there (as did we!).

Here are a few of the fun photos from our outing. I had to use my flash a lot in order to catch the boys...otherwise all you could see was a blur as they were racing by...LOL!

A few of my favorite things...

So I realized the other day that I don't think I have posted many pictures of the Hong Kong skyline which is really amazing and completely unfathomable to anyone who has not seen it live. There is just no way you can take a picture that grasps the magnitude of how huge it is (because it literally won't fit into one picture!). But nonetheless...here are a few shots that I recently took.

The first two pictures show the HK skyline as seen from the "Peak"...atop the mountain that is in the middle of Hong Kong Island. The water in the middle is Victoria Harbour which separates Hong Kong Island from the Kowloon side of Hong Kong.

This following picture is actually looking out over Kowloon side at night from a building in Tsim Sha Tsui (the area where we live on Kowloon side). The large green space just outside the building is Kowloon park where we often play.

And finally, here is the view from the window of our flat...looking out over Hong Kong Island both during the day and at night.

Pretty spectacular, huh? :) You should see it in person...seriously.

I also took some great pictures of the boys playing this weekend in Victoria Park. They are both getting so big!

Cheung Chau Bun Festival

I took the boys to Cheung Chau Island today (one of Hong Kong's outlying islands). It is a 30 minute ferry ride to a small fishing island. We have been there several times before, but this trip was special. Usually we go there to play at the beach but this weekend, Cheung Chau is holding their annual Bun Festival. The festival coincides with Buddha's birthday and began as a ritual for fishing villages to pray for safety from pirates but now mainly showcases traditional Chinese culture.

We started off playing at the beach since it was an absolutely beautiful day!

After playing at the beach, we decided to walk through the town to see all the festivities. The first thing that we noticed was all the buns being made in the local bakeries right on the street. They are traditional chinese steamed buns (slightly sweet-ish). During this festival, they make huge towers of these buns and have a race where people climb the tower to collect the buns (the higher up the bun, the more luck you get). The race is held at midnight this coming Saturday (Buddha's birthday), so we did not see the race, but got to see the towers!

We were also lucky enough to watch some of the traditional Chinese theatre being put on. I have no idea of the plot, but it was really fascinating to watch!

Finally, we also visited the Pak Tai temple which was built in 1783 to commemorate Pak Tai, the Taoist God of the Sea. They were burning lots of incense outside and inside the temple of course, which you will see in the photos...the spiral things are large curled sticks of incense and you can see the written prayers that people have attached to them.

An amazing adventure to say the least! :)

Sunday afternoon Mahjong

Sunday I met some of my HK friends for lunch followed by an afternoon of Mahjong. We ate lunch in Tsim Sha Tsui (the area where our apartment is) under the bridge on Haiphong Road (where the "temporary market" is). It is a very local spot that I have walked through numerous times but had never eaten at. It is basically lots of little stall like kitchens set up with a common eating area. No english spoken or written! My friends informed us of which stalls were best and what to order. We had some yummy beef balls with noodles as well as pork chop and vegetable. For dessert we ate something similar to french toast (thick toast, egg-battered and fried served with honey). It was all very yummy!!!

Then we set off back to our apartment to play Mahjong. David and I bought a tailor made mahjong set that has both the traditional chinese characters as well as the english characters (to make it a little easier for us!). The game tiles are truly beautiful (see pics below). It is a fun game to play although I think I have only scratched the surface of understanding how to play! It is not easy but LOTS of fun!!!

Yay for Poo!

Okay, so we have been working with Will a L-O-N-G time now on potty training (I know...he is 3 1/2...most kids have this down by now). He has been doing really well with going pee in the potty but has refused to poo in the potty. I was keeping him in underwear when we were at home and putting him in pull ups when we went out to avoid the inevitable mess. Well, I finally decided that he wasn't going to figure it out unless I just put him in undies and toughed it out. Yesterday was the first full day in underwear. He did GREAT! No accidents, but then again, NO POO, which is unusual for him. We did keep him in a pull up overnight. Today, he said several times that he had to go poo and we would put him on the toilet to no avail. However, late this afternoon, he finally did not just one, but THREE poos on the potty. He must have been "storing" them from yesterday. He was so proud of himself (as were we!). Finally...some success! :) I have never been so happy to see poo in all my life.

Anyway, that is our big story of the day. Here are some pictures from our day's adventures and play:

We had to buy these bubble guns because the boys love bubbles so much...however D-pax always ends up eating the bubble solution while trying to "blow" the bubbles. The guns bypass the need to blow! :) Needless to say, they were a big hit...they are Buzz Lightyear paraphanalia. Thanks, Disney. LOL...

Hello! I will spare you all the usual "it's been so long since I've posted and I swear I am going to try to post more..." rhetoric! ;)

Just thought I would post some cute pics of the boys from our play at the park this afternoon. It was a hot and humid day in Hong Kong...one of many to come I am sure as summer approaches here.

I can't believe how big they are getting...especially if I see pictures of them from when we first moved to HK. They have changed so much!

Bag Game

Okay, so I usually just post about my kids and Hong Kong...but I was recently tagged by my friend Barbie to play the Bag Game. So...here it is...my diaper/purse/carry all bag...

Here is my bag...purchased at an open market in Hong Kong for $25 HKD (about $3 US!)

Starting at the top left, there are several items of Bobbi Brown make-up (blush, concealer, powder, lipstick), Bert's Bees chapstick (can't live without this!), my cell phone, two Cars (Doc Hudson and Dinaco Blue Lightning McQueen...characters from the movie Cars), an EpiPen Jr. in case of peanut exposure (for Will), a little plastic container containing 2 spoons and 2 forks (needed for the boys in HK restaurants when they only have chopsticks!), a package of Huggies wipes, 2 diapers for D-pax, 2 pull-ups for Will, a little package of tissues (some public toilets in HK do NOT supply toilet paper or supply it only by the entrance!), my three compact nylon bags in carriers (used for shopping instead of getting a plastic bag from the store), a little tupperware container full of multigrain cheerios, a box of raisins (my boys need snacks available at ALL times!) and two small plastic bags (in case of pee-pee emergencies for Will when we can't find a public toilet in time - this has come in quite handy one more than one occasion). I warned you...it is an ALL purpose bag! When you travel on public transportation (train, ferry, bus, taxi) you need to carry a LOT of stuff! No emergency stash "in the car"...it must be in the bag! LOL...

A Delayed Update...

Okay, okay...so I am never going to keep up with this blog as much as I intend! :)

Things here in Hong Kong have been good but busy. David is working a tremendous amount. The kids have been good, although both had a bout with a stomach flu last week. My mom came to visit us in Hong Kong for 3 full weeks, which was great! We had such a good time showing her around and the boys loved having here here. My Dad and Barb will arrive in just over a week for a 4 week stay and we are really looking forward to their visit.

Both kids are doing well with potty training! They pee in the potty regularly, but that's about it. It is good progress from where we were though! :)

Oh...we also cut Will's hair! It was not quite intentional to cut it so short, but I am not sure that the guy who did it knew how to cut curly hair. At first I was devastated, but after a day or so, it really grew on me. He looks like a boy now! :) LOL

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

I hope everyone has had a nice holiday season! We have been busy as ever...hence my lack of posting (as usual!).

David's brother, Tony, was here in HK for Christmas. He currently lives in Syria and we really enjoyed having him here with us to celebrate the holiday. Christmas Eve, we had some friends over for lunch and then had some of David's co-workers over for appetizers and drinks that evening. Christmas day was really fun! Of course we spent the morning with the boys opening up gifts and then playing with gifts. Then in the afternoon we all went to Lamma Island. It was laid back and calm and we just tooled around the little shopping area. The boys both fell asleep on the way home...they were exhausted! Boxing Day was spent at a part of the Tai Tam Reservoir on Hong Kong Island (it sits above the city in the mountain range that splits north and south Hong Kong Island). We were able to rent a paddle boat and paddle around the little lake there. They also sell bread there to feed the fish, which was fun for the boys, of course!

Unfortunately, David's Grandma passed away a few days after Christmas. She was 94 and had lived a long and happy life. She passed quickly, without pain or suffering. Luckily, David was able to fly home to Missouri the morning of New Year's Eve and will be there for the memorial mass. He will return to HK in a few days...I am sure it will be a whirlwind of a trip for him.

So, the boys and I rung in the New Year together here in HK! They had some neat fireworks at midnight, which I was able to watch from the window of our flat. Other than that, NYE was pretty uneventful. Today (New Year's Day), I took the boys out to Lantau Island to Discovery Bay (an ex-pat community) to see some of our friends out there. They got to play and had a nice time.

One of my New Years resolutions is to keep my blog more up to date (I promise, I will try!!!). Here are some pictures of our holiday celebrations:

This week in review

Okay, my goal is to start posting daily (or at least every few days) but at least this time, it has only been a week or so! ;)

It has been an interesting weeks of ups and downs. I have developed a respiratory infection but am on the mend (I think!). The boys have been great and are looking forward to Christmas. Will has already been telling me about how Santa is going to bring him things because "I'm being SOOOO good, mommy". Funny. He has also tried to locate "santa's camera" inside the christmas tree. I had to tell him that it was very small and hidden so that we would not find it.

David's brother Tony is going to be able to join us for Christmas!!! He currently lives in Syria (Damascus) and will be coming to HK from the 19th-26th. We are so excited to have him here to celebrate the holiday. When I told Will he said "UNCLE T-BONE! WOO-HOO!" It was cute.

Okay...clearly I am no good at keeping up with my blog! :) In my defense...it has been really busy around here with David working late most nights (past dinner and bedtime!) and Will giving up taking an afternoon nap about a month ago. That has really limited my "free" time. Oh, and I also re-formated my manuscript (from my post-doctoral research) for resubmission in a new journal (American Journal of Physiology Heart and Circulatory Physiology). Whew...

Everything in Hong Kong is still great! We celebrated Thanksgiving with the boys by making a roast chicken with all the usual Thanksgiving dinner sides (stuffing, cranberries, potatoes, sweet potatoes, green beans, corn and of course pumpkin pie!). We certainly missed our extended family, but had a nice day all in all. I bought a christmas tree and am working on decorations without breaking my budget. The kids and I are going to make a lot of homemade decorations!

We have been busy running around as usual and I am going to let the pictures speak for themselves (by the way, if you want to see the pictures in a bigger form, mouse over the image and click on the little rainbow circle in the lower left hand corner and it will show you the link to my picasa web photo album where you can see larger images). There are a ton...despite the fact that I was camera-less for a few weeks (the boys destroyed my digital camera and we just got a new one before Thanksgiving!). Here goes nothing...

Hi all! Sorry it has been a while since I last posted! David has been really busy working, which means I am really busy at home with the boys! :)

We are doing well. We have some friends (Angela and Wes) visiting us from the US, so it has been fun to show them around and share some of our favorite places! They have taken a ton of pictures, so we will reap the benefits of their excellent photography skills.

I took the boys back to Hong Kong Park the other day. There is a big sand pit there and we brought some dump trucks to play with. There was another little Chinese boy there who had a backhoe and they all took turns sharing their toys. It was fun and I got some great shots of them playing with the trucks.

We will celebrate Will's 3rd birthday on Wednesday October 29. I will be sure to post pictures. I think we are planning to take him to Ocean Park (kind of like Sea World) on Friday to celebrate his birthday as well as Halloween (they have a big show for Halloween). I can't believe he is turning 3!!!

Not much else new to report! Still trying to adventure out to new spots. I miss the fall foliage of VA though. It is still 80-90 degrees here, although not as humid as it was previously. It does not seem like the end of October for sure!

Hong Kong Park

Hello! We adventured today to one of the big parks on Hong Kong Island called Hong Kong Park. It sits right in the middle of the business district, so you are surrounded by skyscrapers, yet it is absolutely beautiful! They do a fantastic job of landscaping and there is a lake stocked with lots of fish and turtles for the kids to see. There is also a conservation area which has lots of different plants to view (with names labeled and a history of the plant). There is an aviary as well but we did not go in today because there was a steep flight of steps and I had the stroller with me and didn't feel like lugging it all the way up! To top it all off, there was this amazing children's playground with SIX different levels. Each level had different things to climb and play on. One was a big sand pit with diggers, which of course Will loved. It was one of the best parks I have ever been to. Seriously!

Goldfish, Flower and Bird Markets

I took the boys to the Bird, Goldfish and Flower markets in Mong Kok today! It is an area just north of where we live (3 train stops from us!) that has a lot of outdoor markets. I thought that the boys would appreciate seeing the animals (although I would have rather done some shopping - amazing stuff up there if you know where to look!).

The Flower market was at least an entire block of shops that almost all sold plants and fresh cut flowers. While still busy, it was a nice change of scenery!

The Goldfish market was really cool. A whole street with many fish stores. The fish are out in big aquariums and tanks that you can look at. There was a wide variety in all shapes, sizes and colors, including a whole store that did salt water tanks. Unfortunately, they won't let you take pictures. Will really enjoyed seeing the fish!

The bird market and garden was interesting. Lots of older men sitting around talking, smoking and looking at their birds. And of course birds for sale too.

The extreme close up of the plant was actually taken by Will...I thought it was a pretty cool picture! :) I also love the picture of Will watching the train go by...he is still enthralled with trains. We have to wait to watch them go by or he will throw a fit! After I took that picture he asked if we could go ride on that train.

Next we have to hit the Jade market...think I will do that on on my own so I can enjoy it in peace! :) hahaha....

Big Wave Bay Beach

So I took the boys to the beach today! We had a great time. It was the first time the boys have really gotten to play in the sand and surf so it was fun to see them explore. Of course as we were leaving, I heard an announcement that the beach was "officially" closed because the shark nets had sustained damage in the recent typhoon. Nice. Apparently the beaches here drop very deep very close to shore so they use shark nets to prevent the shark from coming up to the swimming area. Daddy David refers to the boys as "chum" for the sharks and is adamant that they are not to go in the water! :)

We had a nice trip and enjoyed playing in the sea!

Mid-Autumn Festival

Last night was the Mid-Autumn festival here in Hong Kong. It is a big event and everyone carries decorated lanterns in all shapes and sizes out in the streets and parks. We went to the park first and watched a "dragon dance" at the Kung Fu Corner (they practice Kung Fu in the park every Sunday for everyone to watch) then took the kids down to see a big display of lanterns on the Harbor promenade just around the corner of our building.

We had dinner out at a small local restaurant. The food was awesome! We did get a chuckle out of this menu item:

Hello! Well...we've been busy exploring all that Hong Kong has to offer so I have not posted much yet, but I wanted to add some pictures from our first full week in Hong Kong. We have had a great time and are enjoying our new home! I'll let the pictures speak for themselves...

Sorry to overwhelm you with photos, but wanted to catch up on a weeks worth of events! :) We are doing great. It took the boys about a week to adjust to the time difference. They seem to be back on a good schedule, although they are getting up earlier than they were in VA (6am!). It works well for us though, so no complaints.

David started his job this past week and has been enjoying getting to know his colleagues and such. They seem like a very nice group of people and have been very welcoming to us.

D-Pax is *almost* walking! He takes 5-6 steps at a time now, so we know it won't be long. And he is really trying to say some words (other than mama and dada).

Will is so excited that the Pacific Club playroom has a Thomas the Tank Engine train table complete with all the trains! He asks to go there everyday. And I have met several other expat moms and their kids there (they all live in our building). The Pacific Club is a gym/club facility that we have a membership to (comes with the apartment). The Club is in a pier attached to our building and has an amazing play area for the kids. It has the train table, an inside playground (slides...etc), a reading area with tons of books, a ball pit, a small fenced area where they can ride bikes, an air hockey table (Will is really good at it!) and a small computer room (mostly for older kids). It also has a pool and gym facility...etc. Really nice place!

Kowloon Park has also been a big hit with the kids. Not only does it have an awesome outdoor playground and pool, it also has gardens, fountains, an aviary (birds), a maze and a ton of other things to do. I am sure we will enjoy it even more when the weather cools down a bit! It is usually in the upper 80s to low 90s with VERY high humidity (75-90%!!!). It should cool down soon though.

The Big Budda trip was amazing! The cable cars were so high up...I have to admit, it was a little scary. The kids didn't seem to mind though. Will was looking out the window the whole time! We had lunch at the monastery there (they serve a vegetarian lunch, family style).

We went to Lamma island yesterday. We took the ferry (30 min ride from HK island) over and had lunch there and went to the beach. We hadn't planned on swimming, so we didn't have suits! Will got his feet (and clothes) wet...his first time in the ocean. It is on the South China Sea. There are no cars allowed on Lamma island, just bicycles. It seemed very remote...a big change from HK island itself and a nice getaway!

David's mom is still here with us (you'll see her in the photos) until Tuesday. It has been nice to have the extra help and we will be sad to see her go. I will have to re-adjust to taking care of the kids by myself during the day! :)

All in all...we are having a fabulous time!

well...here we sit in our apartment in Hong Kong! The kids did fantastic on the flight over and our apartment is really great! I will post some pictures once I can see straight!

T minus 16 days and counting! Yes, that's right, we leave Charlottesville, VA on August 25 for Richmond where we will stay overnight and depart for Hong Kong the morning of August 26. Our flight takes us to JKF (NYC) first, then onto a Cathay Pacific flight direct to Hong Kong! We are flying business class (woowoo) to HK and have elected to just have 3 seats since we don't thing D-Pax will sit in a seat by himself since the "pods" in business class sit at an angle (an he wouldn't be able to see us). Hopefully we will not regret this! The "pods" look fantastic and roomy and the chairs fully recline, so maybe we can sleep some too.

We land in HK on Aug 27 at about 6pm their time (which is 6am eastern time!). Adjusting to jet lag with two kids should be OH SO FUN! :) Hopefully they will be so exhausted from the trip that we can just sleep. Wishful thinking I am sure!

Our heads are spinning a little trying to wrap up all the loose ends here as you can imagine!

Hooray! We have an apartment!

Hooray! We officially have a 2BR + study apartment in Hong Kong! You can check out the website at http://www.gatewayapartments.com.hk/en/index.htm

It is a place called The Gateway apartments. It is on the Kowloon side and the building (high rise of course!) looks out over Victoria Harbor onto Hong Kong Island. It is very near a nice park called Kowloon Park (http://www.lcsd.gov.hk/parks/kp/en/index.php), which should be really nice for the kids. We did have to sign a one year lease, so hopefully we won't be disappointed! :)

I am excited because it comes with daily MAID SERVICE! WOO-HOO! And it is over 1700+ sqft, which is huge by Hong Kong standards. All in all, we feel good about our decision.

Well...not exactly! We have just under 2 months of final preparations to make before we make the move to Hong Kong in September 2008. We are a little overwhelmed right now with all the things on our "to do list" but are excited none the less.

We created this site to keep everyone in the loop about our adventures (both before and during our journey). I am sure we will be posting much more once we arrive!
